A student of Mangrove Cay High School in Andros is the recipient of the 2020 Deltec Initiatives Foundation scholarship.
David Rolle is the second Deltec Scholar since the scholarship program was launched in 2019.
The Deltec Initiative for Scholarship and Education (DIFSE), one of the three pillars of the Deltec Initiatives Foundation fully funded by Deltec Bank & Trust Limited program, is one-of-its-kind; providing Bahamian students in the Family Islands with a full scholarship and mentorship throughout the 4-years of tertiary education at University of the Bahamas.
The purpose of the scholarship is to increase postsecondary education opportunities to Family Islands students who otherwise would not have the financial means to fulfill their educational goals. Deltec is a longtime advocate for promising and deserving young Bahamians. The future of our nation’s economy, democracy and quality of life is dependent upon the preparation of a diverse cadre of leaders who are determined to help build a stronger society. By promoting and providing opportunities, it is the foundation’s aim that these individuals become impactful citizens of The Bahamas in this changing world.
This year’s Deltec Scholar, David, has been described as “a determined young man who is passionate about conservation in Andros”. He will pursue an Electrical Engineering degree at UB this Fall. His inspiration for this field of study was brought on by his seeking a resolve for the “severe and constant power outages in Andros”. He hopes that by completing his studies in this sector he is able to contribute to his beloved hometown by helping to promote energy efficiency and overall infrastructure improvements.
DIFSE Chairlady, Marcia Adderley noted that “In spite of the pandemic, candidates applied to our program without any guidance, as schools were closed. The perseverance of these students really impressed the DIFSE team, and even more impressively were the number of male students who put themselves forward. We are elated to have chosen David as Deltec’s newest scholar. He is a brilliant young man with lots of potential and drive, and we are delighted to help him along this path to achieving his goals. We continue to encourage all family island students to take this simple action by applying for this scholarship.”
The DIFSE program is a highly selective, full scholarship for exceptional public high school seniors who reside in the Family Islands and are in need of financial assistance to pursue a tertiary education. The scholarship is open to students wishing to undertake studies in Information Technology, Economics, Banking, Finance, Human Resource Management, Marketing, Management, Mathematics, Engineering or Sciences at the University of The Bahamas, with a commitment to remain in The Bahamas post-study. The successful candidate will also receive professional development opportunities through Deltec’s internship program.
The Deltec Scholar is chosen based on their academic achievements, demonstrated leadership skills, participation in school and community activities, financial need and a commitment to give back to their communities.
The application deadline for the 2021 scholarship will be released early next year. Public high school seniors from the Family Islands will be invited to apply by completing the application form and writing a 250-word essay on the topic: “Why I should be the next Deltec Scholar”.
